    Answer:

The troposphere is the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere. In troposphere, the change of temperature with height is relatively large. It is the region where cloud formation takes place, convection is active, and mixing is continuous and more or less complete. Following are characteristics of the troposphere:

  • Altitude:  between the Earth surface and the stratosphere. Its thickness varies with season and latitude and is usually 16 km to 18 km thick over tropical regions, and less than 10 km thick over the poles.
  • Composition: contains approximately 75% - 80% of the total air mass. It is most dense at or below sea level. It contains almost all the water vapor of the atmosphere. It is where the clouds form and storms are present.
  • Temperature: decreases with altitude. The rate of decrease in temperature with altitude is on average -6.5 degrees Celsius per kilometer in the lower half and -7.5 degrees Celsius per kilometer in the upper half of troposphere.
  • Air Movement:  lots of air rise and sinking movement due to the variation in temperature, barometric pressure and the interaction of atmospheric gases, especially the amount of water vapor present.
