Swimming is a very good sport for young kids. There are typically three ways your kids can learn swimming: [1] join a year round swimming club; [2] take group swimming classes; or [3] take private swimming lessons.
Year Round Swimming Club
There are lots of swimming clubs in US. They offer year round swimming practice programs. The swimmers are encouraged to participate in competitive swimming meets during the year round program. Practice times range from 2 to 5 or 6 times a week depending on the swimmer's level. Joining swimming club requires quite some commitment from both parents and the young swimmers. In return, the swimmers usually make faster progress.
The USA Swimming web site provides the search capability for you to find out the swimming clubs in your area. From the left menu of USA Swimming home page, click on "Search for Club or LSC" and you will be directed to the search page. For example, when you search for the swimming clubs in city of Raleigh (as of June 2007), you will see following clubs: Marlins of Raleigh, NC State Aquatics Team, New Wave Swim Team, raleigh Swimming Association, YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team. The search results also contain the club level, club web site, and map to the pools used.
Group Swimming Classes
Many organizations that own the pool offer public group swimming classes. For out door pool, classes are often offered in summer. For in door pool, classes are available year round. Public group classes typically last around 8 to 10 weeks. You have the flexibility to choose which session to attend. Taking group swimming classes requires less time commitment than swimming at a year round club. As a consequence, you should have less expectation about the progress compared to year round practice. No pain, no gain.
Private Swimming Lessons
Your kids can also learn swimming through private coaching. With private coaching, you kids will certainly get much more attaintion than group lesson or practice. However, it will cost you more. Since swimming is a sport that requires long period of practice to improve both technique and speed, you should not expect a couple of or dozens of private lessons will be enough for your kids to master swimming skills. Typically, mixing private lessons with year round practice or group classes is more cost effective to improve your kids' swimming skills.
private coaching information can be easily obtained by talking to swimming class coaches or swimming club coaches.
