    Answer:

The history of National Teacher Day goes back to 1943. That's when a teacher named Mattye Whyte Woodridge began writing to our Nation's leaders about the need for a day to honor teachers. She wrote to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for 10 years. Then in 1953, Mrs. Roosevelt convinced Congress to celebrate National Teacher Day. For years, the day was shuffled around the calendar, but now National Teacher Day has found a happy home on Tuesday of the first full week of May.

Did you know that teachers spend about $400 a year of their own money to help students? That adds up to more than a billion dollars a year. Teachers also devote more than 50 hours a week to their jobs. Many teachers live near where they teach, so teachers are very involved in the community, too!

National Teacher Day is a good time to give back to those that give so much. Take a look at these ideas. Or, come up with your own ways to say "thank you!" to your schoolhouse heroes!

  • Hang a "thank you" sign on each classroom door.
  • Ask the PTA to sponsor "A Teacher to Remember" essay contest.
  • Call a radio station and dedicate songs to special teachers.
  • Tape a message to play over your school's public address system.
  • Ask stores to offer special discounts for teachers on National Teacher Day.
  • Put ads in your school paper thanking teachers for their hard work.
  • Invite teachers to a reception before or after school. (Ask your parents to help you plan it!)
  • Buy balloons and flowers for the teachers' lounge.
  • Give your teacher a basket of fortune cookies. Add a note about how fortunate you are to have such great teachers!
