"Five Yue" refers to the five famous and big mountains in China, which are respectively located in the east, south, west, north and middle of the country. "Five Yue" is said to be the place where immortals used to live and ancient emperors used to go to offer sacrifice to heaven. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty once conferred the king title on the Five Yue mountains. Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty conferred the emperor title on them, and Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty conferred the deity title on them.
Among "Five Yue", people pay their most homage to Taishan Mountain which enjoys a reputation of "The highest sacred mountain in China". Emperors of different dynasties often held grand ceremonies in Taishan's Daimiao Temple for the Fengshan Sacrifice.
