Ocean is the collection of the vast and expansive salty water on the earth. It takes up 360 million square kilometres for about 70% of the total earth area. Since the ocean area is much larger than that of the continent, some people name the earth as "water ball".
It is completely true that we shall call the earth as a blue ball. The ocean makes up 71% of the earth area. It is divided into many parts by the continents and islands. The largest parts are called oceans, such as Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. There are many subsidiary oceans around the edge of these oceans, such as mediterranean sea, huge continent sea, channels, gulfs, etc. From the whole appearance of the earth, most of the continents gather on the northern part of the earth while most of the sounthern part are oceans. Therefore we often call the northern part continent ball and the southern part water ball.
About 97 percent of the water on Earth is in the ocean.
It's hard to imagine, but an astounding 97 percent of the Earth's water can be found in our oceans. Of the tiny percentage that's not in the ocean, about two percent is frozen up in glaciers and ice caps. Less than one percent of all the water on Earth is fresh. A tiny fraction of water exists as water vapor in our atmosphere.
By some estimates, there are over 1,386,000,000 cubic kilometers (332,519,000 cubic miles) of water on the planet. A cubic kilometer is the volume of a cube measuring one kilometer on each side. Almost all of this vast volume of water is in the ocean.
That's 36,614,237,300,000,000,000,000 gallons of milk!
