The capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region is Lhasa. It lies at an altitude of over 11,000 feet above sea level and located at the north bank of the Kyichu River, a tributary of the Yarlong Tsangpo River. It covers the area of about 1.2 million square km. It has been the center of politics, culture, and religion in Tibet for more than 1,300 years. Its name-- "Lhasa"--means "the land of gods" in Tibetan.
The climate of the city is mild, without severely cold winters or extremely hot summer. The average temperature is about upper 40F in the Spring, 60F in Summer, middle 50F in Fall, and 30F in Winter. It snows occasionally in Lhasa, only once or twice a year, and due to the perpetual bright sunshine, daytime temperatures are not harsh even in the coldest winters.
