Information system is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, processing, and communicating information.

  • Information Systems are a part of Organizations
  • Business firms and other organizations rely on information systems to
    • manage their operations
    • compete in the marketplace
    • supply services
    • and augment personal lives
  • Information systems can be centralized or decentralized 
    • Centralization refers to the allocation of all IT resources to one particular business unit that provides IT services to the whole firm 
    • Decentralization gives individual business units autonomy over their own IT resources without any major considerations over other units unless it is essential to the overall organization policy
  • Information system can interact with an organization at different level:
    • Executive Information System: provide summary information for executives
    • Management Information System: used by managerial or mid-level managers
    • Transaction Process System: used at operational level an organization
    • Other Information System can span organizational boundaries
  • Information systems are implemented within an organization for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and efficiency of that organization.  
  • The interaction between the organization's IT unit and other units is a key determinant of organizational success
