Question: Would you please explain to me the meaning of a phrase "including but not limited to"?

    Answer:

The word include means to contain within as part of the whole and limit means confined within limits. "including but not limited to" means that the things named or given are parts or subset of something larger and the larger thing may also have other parts. The things mentioned by "including but not limited to" are only a partial list.

Example 1

"duties include but not limited to answering phones, filing, typing" means the duties include  more than answering phones, filing, and typing. There are other duties not mentioned here.

Example 2

"The most common symptoms include, but not limited to, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping" means that vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping are common symptoms, but there can be other symptoms than vomiting, diarrhea and cramping.
