later since I started downloading it's still at 0% (???) suggestions on this one, anybody. All of this was on W7 64 bit SP1 system. The fresh install creates it's own partitions.

I had the same issue on Dell XPS 8300 Windows 7 Home.
Start with a fresh install of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with network drivers installed.
I've actually had that problem in the past too so it was one of the first things I checked.

Yes it can, it just means the updates are "stuck" on microsofts end or the windows update is borked.
I tested this with a 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 installation. This time, since the network controller was functioning out of the box, I just started windows updates. The computer just sat and ran and ran and ran, I just watched the green bar go across, nothing ever happened. You have to download Windows 7 SP1 standalone msi installer: Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center For 32-bit, choose this To rule out any system related problem try running UpdateGenerator.exe from a different system. I've tried to hide all the 132 updates hoping SP1 would show up after a second search for updates but windows update doesn't like that particular trick as SP1 doesn't show Andy D.
