Decided that their may have been a power surge on the USB, so unplugged everything, left it for a few hours and retried, same result, nothing. This mostly happens on start up and once desktop loads up either my USB mouse freezes or my keyboard doesn't work or sometimes BOTH. Recently, i've been facing this strange problem that whenever i turn off my laptop, the mouse connected to one of my USB ports... I came across the same issue as ctrl003, however restarting my computer did not reset anything and the USB ports still didn't work. Any ideas whats wrong? They are both connected to the USB ports on the motherboard at the back of the computer, and unplugging and replugging does not make them work again.

Reboot your computer, and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. I decided to reboot, to see if that would fix the problem, unfortunately not, everything usb, including external hard drive and wireless adapter are not being picked up. So I was using my USB to boot linux on my Windows computer and I also had important data on it. In the mean time, the only thing I had not checked are the power options in Device Manager, so I went to take a look...no power tab on Windows 7.
