I thought it was the HDD problem, so I plug in another USB HDD and it fried that one to.
If it sees it there and it's not a mount point then it's an NTFS / OS X file format issue. I'm not sure what sort of failure this might be, but unless a PC detects it I don't think there's any chance you can get data off it. I guess this proved too much for his computer and it just started sporadically not recognizing various devices. The computer doesn't detect it because when I open my computer the hard drive doesn't appears there... Once you are in safemode, make sure to connect drive and see what happens. Macs can read from NTFS volumes but I'm not aware of a method to write to an NTFS volume.
